Saviour Syndrome

One figure reaches down, another gets pulled up, but the ledge does not ask why, and perhaps neither should we. Because sometimes the hand that keeps reaching isn't for the person below at all. It's reaching for the version of itself that only exists mid-rescue, needed, necessary, indispensable. Take away the fall, and what's left standing at the top might find itself strangely unmade. Perhaps some people do not fear being needed. They fear discovering who they are when no one needs saving.
