Selene

Selene never asked to be looked at. She draws the tides out, calls them back in, then draws them out again, indifferent to the eyes that insist on making meaning of her. Close your eyes, and nothing changes. The ocean was never watching her either. It moved because she moved. Perhaps that is the oldest kind of power: the kind that does not know it is being witnessed. It does not perform, persuade, or announce itself. It does not require an audience to become real.
